The Dirty Book Club
Do you remember The Clique series? Or Monster High? Young Adult goddess, Lisi Harrison is back in our lives with her wit and tales of friendship in her adult debut novel, The Dirty Book Club.
M.J. Stark’s life is picture-perfect—she has her dream job as a magazine editor, a sexy doctor boyfriend, and a glamorous life in New York City. But behind her success, there is a debilitating sense of loneliness. So when her boss betrays her and her boyfriend offers her a completely new life in California, she trades her cashmere for caftans and gives it a try. Once there, M.J. is left to fend for herself in a small beach town, with only the company of her elderly neighbor, Gloria, and an ocean that won’t shut up. One afternoon, M.J. discovers that Gloria has suddenly moved to Paris with her friends to honor a fifty-year-old pact. And in lieu of a goodbye, she’s left a mysterious invitation to a secret club—one that only reads erotic books. Curious, M.J. accepts and meets the three other hand-selected club members. As they bond over naughty bestsellers and the shocking letters they inherited from the original club members, the four strangers start to divulge the intimate details of their own lives… and as they open up, they learn that friendship might just be the key to rewriting their own stories: all they needed was to find each other first.
Let me start by saying that when she brought up this idea years ago, I was intrigued. I had no idea exactly how the book would play out but I was growing up and really looking forward to reading something new and fresh by Lisi. I at times would internet stalk her when she disappeared from her Blah-g. I saw she would respond a bit to me on twitter and was so glad she was still alive and well.
Then it finally happened! Lisi was done with her book and it had a release date! Of course I bought it right away. Of course I dove right into it as soon as possible.
I must confess there were a few times while reading that my one year old was demanding attention and I would get a bit frustrated having to drag myself away. But I was finally able to finish it and I was blown away.
Was this really the same author from my younger days? Not to take anything away from The Clique since I loved those books, I just highly enjoyed this. I am not personally into erotic books. I tried 50 Shades of Grey, and while I won't get into it too much, I found better sentence structure with some first graders and it had too many eye rolling moments, I felt that Lisi did circles with this book.
itwasn't overly raunchy, it was filled with girl power and friendship and for that I am thankful.
Lisi honestly has the talent to reach to young readers but she has the attention of adults as well. I hope from the bottom of my heart that Lisi continues to write more books because reading this book made me remember why I have been such a big fan of her work.
I recommend this book this book to readers who wonder what it is like to be in a book club, to starting over and who just want to laugh out loud while reading.
So ready for the next book by Lisi so Lisi if you read this, bring it on!
