Tower of Dawn/Sarah J Maas Review
This post is my review about Tower of Dawn but also of Sarah J Maas. I know I am so late to the Throne of Glass party, but I have finally finished reading the books that are out so far and there have been up's and down's but over all. I loved this series. There will be spoilers in this post. Here is the summary of ToD and we will start there.
Chaol Westfall has always defined himself by his unwavering loyalty, his strength, and his position as the Captain of the Guard. But all of that has changed since the glass castle shattered, since his men were slaughtered, since the King of Adarlan spared him from a killing blow, but left his body broken. His only shot at recovery lies with the legendary healers of the Torre Cesme in Antica—the stronghold of the southern continent's mighty empire. And with war looming over Dorian and Aelin back home, their survival might lie with Chaol and Nesryn convincing its rulers to ally with them. But what they discover in Antica will change them both—and be more vital to saving Erilea than they could have imagined.
I have a problem with starting new Sarah books. I am so afraid that they won't live up to my expectations. This was especially true of the last two books in the series. Tower of Dawn, I literally just stared at sometimes just wondering, could I read the book about Chaol and not Aelin? What if I hated it? Would it ruin the series for me? Once you read something you can't un-read it so I kept pushing it off.
I finally caved and read it. I had a hard time putting it down when my reading time was up. (Meaning when my 21 month old woke up from his nap) I confess I loved the book. Even without Aelin, it was a strong book. A strong story. It was a growth of other characters and happy endings for those I didn't think would have them.
Something Sarah is known for, and a lot of people complain about it is that she switches love interests. A couple that becomes a couple at the beginning of the story does not stay a couple through out the series. I don't understand why so many people are bothered by this. It is how real life is. And yes I KNOW that these series are fantasy series but really, people don't get their first boyfriend or girlfriend and stay with them forever. Aelin starts off so young in the series it is natural for her to fall in love several times. She still ends up getting married pretty young but at least she didn't jump to marry the first guy she fell in love with. She was able to grow from the loves and crushes she had and it helped shape who she was.
In ToD, I didn't expect Chaol to fall in love with someone else like he does in the story but I think in the end, it was his best fit. The part that makes me the most nervous is that we are leading up to a rather big war. If there is only one book left in the series, will the series have a happy ending or will we lose some of the characters we love so dearly?
Sarah is such a talented writer and story teller. I have really enjoyed all of her books and I am really looking forward to what she comes up with next. I know she is about to have a baby so that is going to probably delay her up coming books or series but I plan on keeping this series as well as the ACOTAR series forever. They have won a place in my heart.
